COLORADO GLENS
Hi, we are Rich and Maria Whetsell and live in Castle Rock,
Colorado with our daughter Kelsey and our three Glens. Our
first Glen was Brina, a very loving wheaten female who is very
independent, yet will go out of her way to get your attention.Born
9/19/97 in Boston, MA.,she comes from a long line of Champion
Glens. Her sire is UKC, ARBA, Puerto Rican, Guatemalan, World
and International Champion Glenshearoon Irish Lad (Danny Boy)
and her dam is ARBA Champion Jeonty Krafty Veronica. Our second
Glen was Dillon, a wheaten male who is very laid back and loves
to please you. Born 5/30/98 in Chicago, IL. He also comes from
a long line of champion Glens. His sire is ARBA Champion Florence
Brendan McCarthy (Flurry )and his dam is Dominion Finna Lass. Our
third Glen is Strongbow's Lady Blue of CastleRock(Mandy) a blue
brindle female. She too comes from a long line of Champion Glens.
During the summer of 1996, we got interested in the Glen of
Imaal Terrier after my wife, Maria, saw a picture and read an
article on Glens from a Dog Breed book at our local library.
At the time, she was doing some research on other terriers and
didn't realize she was in the rare breed section of the book.
It was love at first site and the more she read, the more convinced
she became that this was the breed for us. She felt the Glen
reminded her a lot of the kind of dog I had told her I grew up
with, which was a Dandie Dinmont Terrier. Needless to say it
didn't take long for her to convince me that we needed to find
a Glen of Imaal Terrier.
The following week, while shopping in Denver, my wife found
an advertisement in a dog magazine for the Glen of Imaal Terrier.
The minute we got home, she called the breeder in the ad and
was told there weren't any puppies available at the time. The
breeder informed us that we could check back with her in the
spring. We continued our search and as luck would have it, we
found a second ad for a Pat Young. After speaking with Pat and
hearing more about the breed, I was even more convinced we had
chosen the right breed. Pat informed me that she knew a breeder
who was planning on mating her Glens that Fall and gave us a
number to get in touch with her. After talking with the breeder,
Peggy King Ward, our name was added to her list and if all went
well, we would have a Glen by November.
The mating that September was unsuccessful. Peggy called to
let us know and said she was going to try again in March. She
also said that if we were willing to wait, our name would be
moved to the first position on her list for a female Glen. March
was a bust, but we were not about to give up. The longer we waited
and the more research we did just compounded our desire for a
Glen. Finally in July, Peggy had a successful breeding. On September
19th, our Brina was born and a week before Thanksgiving we saw
our first Glen of Imaal Terrier. Even though it took over a year
to get her, the minute we saw her we knew she was worth the wait.
It wasn't very long after getting our first Glen that we knew
one wasn't enough. We decided she needed a mate and thanks to
Pat Young, we were introduced to Phil and Bonne Steffen. They
had a wheaten male puppy available. Dillon arrived in Castle
Rock the following August. Both Brina and Dillon have been shown
at UKC and ARBA . We now plan to show all three of our Glens
at UKC events. We are members of the Glen of Imaal Terrier Club
based in Wisconsin which is the only club recognized by the United
Kennel Club.
After careful consideration and the proper exams, including
a eye exam with a certified ophthalmologist we decided to breed
our glens. On October 24,1999 our Brina and Dillon had their
first litter of puppies. It was a very exciting experience for
the whole family. The litter doubled the Glen population in the
state. At present, to the best of our knowledge, there are 15
Glens living in Colorado.
We have had several different breeds over the years and after
a relatively short time with Glens, find them to be one of the
best overall dogs we have ever owned. There love for Children
as well as people in general and their ability to learn is amazing.
Even though we are still learning about Glens, our love and appreciation
for the breed is just something which seems to grow every day.
